A collaboration of form.
Combining craftsmanship and digital technology.
Doug Stern and Fulcrum Product Development introduced me to the digital fabrication world over a decade ago. As a sculptor, the digital tools (modeling software and 3d printing and machining) have opened up new possibilities of artwork that I never had imagined.
In 2008-09, Doug and I collaborated on the fabrication of COLURE, a sculpture I had conceived of for Swan Point Cemetery’s new mausoleum. The tapered circle was made from twenty-four parts with each pattern CNC milled in high-density foam board. We worked together to develop all the fixtures and tweak the 3d CAD files to produce highly accurate patterns in preparation for casting molds.
Throughout the process, Doug was generous with his time and knowledge base which resulted in perfect master patterns for the project.
